SB & THE FIVE-O

I was talking to my niece and asked her how she was feeling about it being 1997. And she said "It’s 2007 Uncle Marty, you’re stuck in the 90’s". She couldn't have been more right. For the first time in my life I feel like the last 10 years have just blurred past like a speeding automobile traveling in the opposite direction. Bruuuumpppphhhh! Oh there have been some head on collisions with time this past decade, like the weeks of drudgery as a new employee of a relatively non-existent banking company in a satellite market with no clients. Talk about boredom. I remember for one entire day I listened to NPR internet radio and scoured the archives for cult status interviews with white dwarf stars such as David Johanson and his alter-ego Buster Pointdexter (genius) and the drug stenched mysterious songwriter named Izzy Stradlin that was the mind behind Axl Rose. I spent hours etching brick walls on standard ruled yellow notepads until the last slivers of my number 2 pencil slid under my fingertips like Kryptonite spikes into Superman or "I am super bored man!"

I started listening to dozens of ghost stories I found online so I could find one that I could adopt as my own. When at a dimly lit party I could lean in real close and whisper "Wanna hear a ghost story". And then I would swear by all accounts it was true cause it happened to me and could happen to you. I did find that perfect ghost story and it ended with of all things the least scary catch phrase of the ghost story telling world. It simply said "YOU GOT IT", at the exact right time with the vocal timber of intent. It was magical in its simplicity. I know about this sort of thing because my sister made me take a class with her at the University we attended together. It was called "Supernatural Themes in Classic Literature". It was essentially ghost stories with a more sophisticated name. I learned that word "Doppelganger" is German for "Double Person" and if you see your own doppelganger or twin then you die. Now that is a great story. They essentially come to get you cause there is only to be one of you on this planet. With that said, I don’t know how the Germans felt about identical twins. Check their tourism bureau before planning a family vacation.

Back to time flying. I remember more from the boredom times than the time traveling past two years. It's during the mandatory times of reflection that you lay tracks for the future path or at least point yourself in a direction of choice.

Where is everyone going? Maybe I will hitch a ride. You’re always welcome on my trip. I carry a strict policy of more the merrier. Oh, that would be a good song name "More The Merrier". I always keep my eyes peeled for good song names or album titles. "More The Merrier" also sounds like a Steve Martin holiday adventure movie of a large extended family and the hijinks that ensue. By the end of the flick everything is A-OK and sealed with a kiss. Good for Mr. Martin, life is that easy in the thrills of suburban bliss.

I am not a mind reader or predictor or psychic or even a horoscope junkie but I do know what 87.6% of you reading this will be doing this Sunday. Watching the BIG GAME!!!!! Yep that's what I'm gonna be doin. Watchin that BIG Game. Big G....... Nope, wait, wait a minute. I can’t do it. I getta step back for a sec…. I can’t hold back, I feel it burning a hole through my diaphragm and scratching towards the surface, it’s gotta come out. SSSSSS SSSSSSSSSS SSSSUUUUU SUPER BOWL!!!!! There I did it. And it feels pretty good. I don't quite understand how you can copyright those words and nobody on TV or radio or in general public can even say it without paying for it. The Super Bowl is now like the band KISS. Yer gonna pay for it. Weird circumstance is that every time I type the words Super Bowl my computer is making a crumpled sheet of paper noise. Oh hold on someone is at the door. Weird, but I think I just heard something rustling in the bushes. Oh no, it's the Super Bowl popo and the Five-O comin to get me. If you don’t hear from me then you can assume I am buried in the end-zone at Soldier Field due to my forbidden use of the words SUPER BOWL.

You know it. Say it loud n proud.

Go Bears! Sunday Night We’re Gonna Party Like It’s 19-85.

Marty,

Your blogs always brighten my day! Ironic you mention doppleganger tonight, I just discussed that term with my English II classes two days ago.

The region I live in has many ghost stories of its own...Cry-baby Bridge, the Senath Lights...and many, many more. A theatre we used to do plays in was said to be haunted, and several of us saw evidence of "Juliet" as she was often called - because she materialized in the balcony when she chose to be seen.

One night a friend and I decided to take a drive to the "haunted church" after a late night play rehearsal. It appears to rise and fall as you approach it on a very narrow country road, and at times its' windows appear to glow. If that weren't enough, to add to the ambience there is a cemetery behind the church. This was around midnight...all I know is about a minute after we got there, there were headlights coming out from behind the church (I think there was probably a gravel pit out there or something where kids were parking), but I floored it - back up the road we went and we never looked back.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts :)

Peace,
Cheza

Super Bowl? Isn't that the game where little guys wear all that padding to make them look huge then run around for five minutes with a little piece of inflated leather - or is it synthetic these days - before slapping each other on the arse and high fiving then sitting on a bench for the rest of the game? I'm wondering how many people will watch this year just for the wardrobe malfunction...

I will be in a house full of people watching the SuperBowl. But I will probably only pop in once in awhile. For some reason, watching pro sports doesn't entrance me the way it does a lot of people.

Now a good ghost story, that's a different question. I used to love listening to Richard Crowe on the Eddie Schwartz radio show!

I would love to hear you tell a ghost story!

Thanks for sharing your life!

As for the ghost story, I can only imagine what you would bring to any truth or urban legend. Honestly Marty, you would hypnotize most just reading a cereal box.

Marty, Sometimes I think you should really lay off the booze before you write. Yeah, it's funny once-in-a-while, but when there is so much down time for the band, us loyal waiting fans would like a little more substance to hang on to. And maybe even an expression of appreciation for all the hours of voting we do to get you those awards. I would hate for you guys to lose your loyal fanbase because of lack of communication or appreciation. JMHO.
Signed,
A dedicated and loyal fan that wants to see you make it big!!!!

Well, Marty, may I say that you continually amaze..
I am so sorry I didn't get to meet you at HJ because you were upstairs and I was downstairs waiting for you to emerge. Bummer. (OMG, I'm old.)
But I took the chance and FLEW alone, scared to death, just to come to Chicago to see you and Lovehammers do your thing in real life and meet the online "family" created because of your influence.
I will meet you this year, and I will tell you to your face how you've changed my life in profound ways.
Happy 2007 to you and may the use of SUPER BOWL put all of us in the pokey together...lololol!

Sorry, but I'm with the other poster who talked about needing some acknowledgment from you directly to your fans, who helped you win an award and you haven't thanked any of us. We've voted tirelessly for four months to get you and the LH Top 10 awards on MySpace and no acknowledment there either. I miss the old Marty..the one who truely cared about his fans. We have no new info on the band or where you are headed. We work endlessly night and day to get you on TV, get radio to play you, we buy your CD's and pay bookoo bucks to fly all over the country to go to your shows. A little thanks and appreciation would be nice. How about the money donations for the band when the money was stolen? Did anyone receive thanks for those donations? I know I didn't get any thank you for my donation. Fans are like flowers Marty, you have to water them once in awhile or they die.

I love this blog. Its fun and left me with a smile on my face.

Marty writes his blog for us, his fans, to read. Pointless - I don't think so. Why should it have to be serious?

And as for acknowledgement, don't we do these things because we love LH and want their music heard all over...I know thats how the majority of us hammerheads think.

I know this isn't my place to reply but...I'm taken back to many years ago in Sunday school when we learned that true good deeds are best done without needing to draw attention to ourselves and without expecting any praise for them. For each of these good deeds we would get a jewel in our crown in heaven.

Sometimes it's hard when we feel we are always giving to someone and not receiving anything back but I also think that it's pretty giving of a person to take the time to share some of their thoughts and stories with fans. If anyone doesn't enjoy the stories - it's the Internet click on something else that you like - no big deal.

There, now everyone can have a jewel in their crown and we can all get back to having fun in the sandbox:)

I agree with the previous poster: "If anyone doesn't enjoy the stories - it's the Internet click on something else that you like."

I don't agree that it's no "big deal," though. I see lots of former LH fans clicking on something else that they like -- moving on to support other bands. That seems like a big deal to me.

A loyal fanbase is a big deal and when those fans lose morale and move on, it makes me sad. I want to see this band succeed. Those people -- many people -- who have moved on used to want the same thing.

Saying "thank you" for donations and fan-based awards is common courtesy -- and it takes less time than writing a blog about boredom. It turns out those thank you's that never came would have been really important to some people -- and maybe they wouldn't have jumped ship and clicked on something else that they like.

No big deal? Seriously? It seems like a big deal to me.

Anyway, interesting blog, Marty. Thanks for taking the time to write it.

I'm not looking for the meaning of life in your blogs, Marty.

To the previous poster: Honestly? many fans are looking for an update on what's happening with Marty and the Lovehammers' career and/or any direction on how the fans can further support his/their efforts. Marty has always written intelligent, genuine, inpsirational and insightful blogs starting back at the days on MSN and throughout his/their tour with INXS last year and beyond. These blogs DO seem a bit self-indulgent and at times give the impression that the hard work of the fans is inconsequential. Telling us "if we don't like the blog don't read it" only serves to turn away another concerned fan, every fan is important, especially when their are no tour dates scheduled, etc. Is that what you want? I think everyone has the right to express their honest thoughts. I also applaud mc.org for not censoring these comments, I hope this continues. Many, many fans are are truly concerned about not feeling appreciated by the band and/or a lack of respect. We've all been working our "tails" off to support the band. Many would hope the same about of effort is being put out on both sides.

Mean people suck.
I think the mean people should go and clear their heads and come back when they can be constructive.

I used to read martycasey.org religiously, but not anymore. Marty barely posts there, and when he does it tends to be very short. Someone said we should be glad he even posts at all. Guess what? I'm not.
Too bad, he used to have the reputation as the rocker who cared about his fans.
Please don't start telling me how busy he is. I raise 2 kids and a hubby, & work 9-6 and still have time to post several times a day.
Now we get a blog about being bored?! I've got an idea to fill your time Marty, start reading your forum.

3:46 PM

To the poster who addressed the "mean people:"

Those "mean people" are trying to be constructive. They're concerned that Marty and Lovehammers are losing fans at an alarming rate. They are fans who care and want this band to be successful. They don't want more fans to go away. They're being honest and addressing some of the issues that have made fans lose interest. That seems constructive to me.

A lot of the "mean people" do go away. But you know what? They don't come back. A band needs fans, just like a company needs customers. When customers go away, a company goes bankrupt. When fans go away, a band has a problem.

Companies pay money for focus groups to find out what their customers think of their product. A band who is interested in their fans would welcome the same kind of constructive information from their fans -- for free.

So, you may think I'm a mean person, but that's my constructive opinion. Sticking one's head in the sand and not noticing what's going on is destructive.

You people are ridiculous! What do you want-a BOZO button for spending hours voting online? You should be happy they won, and not beg for acknowledgement. That was your choice to spend your time that way. AND the band has thanked their fans for the donations a while back on the LH.com website. I love reading the Marty blog. It is supposed to be a fun little insight into his world, not the bible. We've been spoiled by the band being so close with their fans and just because it may not be as often or as you like it right now....too bad and get a life! GO BEARS :)

Why help Bands? I'm in a mood to tell ya, that's why!

When a person asks you a simple question. What kind of music do you listen to? How do you answer? What is your response? Where do you go from there? How do you explain your interests? Why do "anything" for a band, when all they do for you is save your life, make you happy, lift your spirits, make a family out of friends, give you life again? Easy answer or more difficult than what ya thought huh?

What kind of music do I listen to? Rock N Roll bay bay, is usually the first thought. Well then, what kind of Rock N Roll? Oh My! Do I begin by reminiscing about seeing Hendrix play live, and thinking that I've finally found what "magic" is all about? Do I recall Janis's screams, and Morrison's poetry that changes your way of life when heard or felt? Or hearing Jackson Fives, Bob Seger, and Aerosmith, and thinking am I getting old or are things really changing? Passion is what I'd like to explain what I listen to, passion. Not just Rock N Roll, but passion. A new genre? Maybe.

How do you answer? I think I would answer by saying what music has done for me,- the LOVEHAMMERS is doing for me, and what I expect it do for me in the future! As a kid, it is a foundation for friendships, laughter, and plain old rebellion! What does your parents listen to, they listen to Rock N Roll, well, I'm going to listen to Country then! Oh My....It grows with you as a person, it changes right along with you, even if your not aware of said changes, it moves and evolves also! What do you as a person accept in said changes is how the music will still affect you, and how you will answer questions pertaining to said music.

What is your response? Passion, is what I would say! I want to hear it, feel it, and let it remain with me over the ages, over the different generational gaps, over the years, PASSION in music is what my response would be! Who in their right minds would sit there and listen to something, that they don't like?...oh Hellooooo....Passionate sounds are so unique to each and every one of us, that pinpointing a certain band, a certain sound, a certain genre is just not what music is there for. Passion can be felt for some by listening to Mozart, bumping with Rap, crying with Country, dancing to Disco, or jammin' with Rock N Roll.....Responses also would come in many different forms, but personally, mine is a bit deeper. Things that piss me off is that the arts and music appreciation are being cut left and right from the public educational budgets, to be replaced by what? Volleyball, Hiking trips, snorkling, and more correctional facilities? Not having that history of music, that chance to make a difference in this world, to pass up the opportunity to make history, well, it's a shame is all! I could go on and on about that, but I won't. Oh My...Passion is my response, I want and NEED to hear it!

Where do you go from there? Life moves on, life changes, and life is good for some, bad for others, but in general, it's just life! It's what we as individuals want to make of it is what matters. Do we make a difference? Do we just sit back and let shit happen? Do we feel passion anymore? Do we as American's remember passion? Do we appreciate the people that go out there, and make history happen! Do we join them? Do we just watch? What to do what to do? Passion is NOT passive, it is most assuredly an aggressive, moving, emotional, well felt emotion. Can't just sit on your ass and say, yup, I felt that passion...Hell no, you sing, you dance, you laugh, you live, you feel, you share, you die, you contribute to said passion one way or another! Either it be the arts-draw a masterpiece, science- discover something cool, medicine- save someone, music- make it passionate, parenting- be the best Mom or Dad that kid can have, ya all get the picture, make it happen! Make a difference if not in the world, but yourself! Smile, it's contagious? Make a difference, it works! That's where we need to go, to make a difference and feel better about ourselves, ok, point taken, BITE ME if your bored, read the rest or I'll cry?....

How do you explain your interest? People from every generation, every country have what is simply called, communication. It's simple. It's done by an eye movement, or a smile, or a word, or a blog, or just about anything you do, yup, your communicating. Now, how well do you do that, is another whole question, and has been studied for years by great minds....To explain passion is what I guess my point is turning into being? Who knows, my mind is weird, don't ever try to understand it, it'll confuse you more than it alreadys does me?.....

Why do anything for a band? Why oh why? WHY NOT? Is what I should ask. Just think about it! Where would we be without music? Do we not feed the birds?...lol....Do we as Americans just EXPECT the musicians to feed themselves, love themselves, and give us what we soooo need in our lives for free?...Oh wait a minute?....We buy CD's.....woooo hoooo, NOT ENOUGH people. Not enough by far in my opinion. Do we just turn the dial, and expect to feel said passion, and do nothing in return? I do realize Americans get lazier and lazier as years go by, consumers thrive on purchases to make their little lives simpler and more of a conveniance to them. Where does it all end? Not a good place, with no passion or love, and that's not acceptable in MY life. For too many years, history shows us that starving artist, that hungry musician, and we as people, just expect that flow to continue, and Heaven help someone if they want to complain about the new music, or what is going on in the "business", DO SOMETHING about it! Complain about high gas prices, get your asses up off that couch and GO VOTE. Complain about music just not having that passion or spark, SUPPORT your love, your passion, do something about it. Just as JFK has remarkably stated, Don't ask what your country can do for you, ask what YOU can do for your country! hehehe....Ask what YOU can do for your music! Your band, your bass players, your vocalists, your passion, ask what YOU can do to make them continue to make you dance, laugh, sing, heal, rejoice, and be free! Don't sit here and say I WANT MORE FROM MARTY, SAY WHAT CAN I GIVE MARTY CASEY AND THE LOVEHAMMERS!!!! FREEDOM I say, mark my words, music is FREEDOM, and we as Americans need to defend our freedoms, no matter what they are, and to stop expecting things to just be there, to just stay the same, cause they are NOT, times-they always be a changing-let's change with em?.....When a Bass Player puts a plea out for a Grassroots campaign, to get that passion felt, to get that music out, to get them the recognition that they so well deserve, and we do nothing about it, oh helllllo....shame shame shame on you people......Spread your passion, spread that love, spread that FREEDOM that we get free from these musicians, and let's start paying for our enjoyments here. Am I ranting, oh well, deal with it, or stop reading! I have a passion for some music, well, it's sort of saved me in many ways, and yup, I'm up off my ass, and I'm doing something about it, what are you doing?.......Every little thing a person can and does do for said musicians, bands, performing artist, is all a payback in ways that we should be doing, to continue in our love, our love of music.

Sitting in a cold room, having chemotherapy pumping through you in rates that will either kill you or save you. Existing with cancer eating away at your body, or just waiting for it's deadly return, just existing. Feeling pain that grips you with power beyond your control. Living when all symptoms tell you, that you should be dead already. Giving back to someone, a dear friend in Dino, for giving me something other than passion again, but giving me hope, giving me music, giving me a friendship that I adore, giving me a part of my life that I thought was gone, songs.....sounds.....life......energy.....the Lovehammers......giving, giving, giving, no matter what I can ever imagine in doing for that man, it would never, never, never equal what he's done for me! Giving this passion in music, friendship, love, and raw emotions all for free, all for nothing, is unequal in me ever doing anything to re-pay him....But I try, as should each and every person that enjoys their passion....And it's NOT just the Lovehammers passion is it?....Ever hear of Building a Better Spaceship, or Juke Kartel, or BuckCherry, ok, or Mozart or Tim McGraw (is that his name?), anyone that brings you that passion, that love.....do something back for them, more than just buying that CD.....Start a campaign to get their Bass back for him when they are in trouble, when they mess up and leave their money in motel rooms and have bitches steal it, call everyone you know, and help get some of that money back for him, catch them when they fall, cause I can garuentee that he will catch YOU, with not only his generous personality, but his MUSIC, his sounds, his PASSION....and not just DINO'S passion, but Ross, and everyone else out there, fulfilling our needs of music, and Rock N Roll. Get up off your asses, and do something creative for these musicians, give back a bit, and I bet cha, you'll be making that difference in not only your life, but America's also. Stop just getting, and start giving, be creative, and be active, cause passion is not dormat, it's flowing through blood, let it flow, let it flow.....hey, isn't there a song about that somewhere...?....oh my....oh...it's let it snow let it snow...ok, I'm shutting it up for now.....Do something about this, have ya visited the Lovehammers eStore lately, and attempted to make that difference? It's called the Shoebox of Lovehammers Love campaign, come make a difference and SHOW me some passion people!

Ok, love ya all, I think, and talk to ya laters.......

First let me say that I'm glad to hear from you, Marty - I'd thought we'd lost you in the vast vortex of the world forever. I'd also like to add that this is, indeed, an interesting read on its own.

Now here's the issue - we still have no clue what, if anything, you have been or are working on. Show dates? New music? Anything? And how did you feel about winning those awards? Surprised? Excited? Happy? Grateful? Or do you not care at all?

And since the treatment of fans has come up over and over again I'll add my thoughts on this. I don't think anyone here expects their asses to be kissed, but acknowledgement would be nice. A simple nod in a blog or "thank you" bullentin from the band (or a band member's) page to fans in general would do wonders to boost morale. (And make no mistake, morale is low and slipping fast.)

Perhaps that other poster is correct and we've been spoiled as fans by being made to feel so close you and the rest of the band, but that's not our fault. You and the rest of the guys kept in contact via the sites and boards all the time in the months following the RockStar show - YOU set the standard, it's not our fault that we expect it to be maintained.

I hope you keep writing Marty, but next time I hope you've got something really grande for us - like your plans for the band (or even just yourself) musically, show dates, or even just a "thanks for all your support". That would be something truly invigorating for all.

I'm NOT bringing every thank you these men have said over here, get up off your ......and GO READ IT....

Oh well, what do you people expect? Want something different, want MORE from a man that works his ass off, literally, gets a month break, that oh hello, they are STILL working people, you may not SEE it all, but ok, I'm shutting it up....You want the THANK YOU'S go find them, and read about them. Oh Marty, why can't you tell me the meaning of life, or find a cure to cancer.

How dare you be a normal guy sometimes, with a better then average job. How dare you be bored of the same old shit and the same old fighting amoungst the cougars.

Why aren't you out trying to help make peace in the middle east or adopting orphans like Brad & Angie.

Oh wait, that's right...you're actually a normal person...well at least most of the time.

Keep blogging, I'd prefer your next one to be an acid induced rant about the GI problems the band suffers on the road.

Who the fuck cares...it's about the music. If you don't like it, don't support it. No one is asking any fans to do anything. Last time I looked no one was forcing anyone to do anything.

I've never experienced any of the LH's not thanking anyone for their help and support.

You said it yourself...they were very "accessible" to their fans. For God's sake, doesn't he deserve any time just to fucking be himself.

I do agree that it is during "mandatory times of reflection you lay tracks for the future" or point yourself in a direction of choice. I am currently at a crossroads in my career deciding what exactly I am going to do next. Aren't all people laying tracks for the future in some aspect of their lives? It sounds like Marty may be doing the same thing; why is he criticized for this?
Whatever. You want to know where I am going? I am going to do the Super Bowl shuffle and watch Da Bears win the Big Game! Why don't you all relax and do the same thing- the more Bears fans the merrier.

Hey, who let Al Borland in here?

I thik many of us worked very hard to help get the guys over the top and win that award. Unfortunately many of us could not attend the ceremonies. It would have been wonderful if we could have gotten some feedback on the festivites. Unfortunately the two that have put up blogs didn't attend so they talked about other matters. I'm certain these things were very important - ghost stories and cab drivers. Truly I would have loved to hear about why they couldn't have been there with their bandmates...I bet there is a great story there somewhere

I dont recall anyone putting guns up to your heads making you spend "hours" voting online or spending your money on concerts and cd's. It was done by your own free will people. What did you expect? Do it for your own self gratification, not to get a personal thank you note from the band. GEESH!! I am embarassed by a lot of the other fans on here and hope Marty knows that we are not all like you looking for the meaning of life and acknlowledgement in the blog. We'll be lucky to get another one with all of this nonsense.
Rock on!

Wow...I'm shocked at what some fans think they are entitled to. I was going to keep my feelings quiet, but this whole thread is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

Most of us do what we do because we enjoy the music, have a great time at shows & have made some great friends through the whole experience. We volunteer our time to street team, run boards, vote, etc because believe in the band and we want to see them make it to that next level.

Most of us don’t expect anything in return. The band has always shown their appreciation for everything the fans do and they make it a point to connect with fans at every chance. We have no right to dictate what we think they “owe” us. The only thing we have a right to expect from them are great shows & cd’s. Sorry, but anything above that is a bonus.

This is a blog…a chance for Marty to connect with us about what has been going on with him. What he feels like writing about. That’s what blogs are. Give the guy a break (all four of them for that matter). The guys don’t need to be reading about all this petty BS. What’s the point?

Don’t you think the guys are anxious to let us know what’s happening next? Don’t you think they want to be out on the road/in the studio doing what they do best? Of course they do!! We don’t know what happens behind the scenes & frankly it’s NONE OF OUR BUSINESS! When we are meant to know about something, they will let us know…they always do.

Now I’ll get off my soapbox. In the meantime while we’re waiting for a news update on the Lovehammers front, do something constructive: e-mail your local radio station, vote for one of the contests, post about the band on other non-Lh sites.

Unlike many of the posters above, I’ll sign my name to this post…

Remember people...SPREAD THE LOVE!!!

Well, I'm definitely not a 'proper' fan - entire albums by bands that I like can pass me by - but personally I love this blog.

Nieces are great. And it is far too long since I've been to the sort of party where you end up snuggled into the corner listening to ghost stories. Next time you hear of that kind of party I want an invitation.

Sadly, I'm in the 12.5% that won't be watching the game. It is actually on but we don't get the channel and being all London 'metro-bloody-sexual' I don't even know anyone that pays for a sports channel. Still there's quite a lot of rugby going on at the moment (Tri-nation? Five nations? no idea). It's pretty similar to your football except that our blokes play in shorts and T-shirts (and have very squashed noses and low-level traumatic brain damage - hmm, appealing), everyone is on the pitch at the same time and no one really seems to care (with the obvious exception of either end zone) where the ball is. I think I prefer your version. I shall cross my fingers. Heidi x

Wow--I can't believe some of the comments on here! Oh yeah, I guess the band is losing fans so quickly that they packed the Sheraton Ballroom on NYE with all those non-existent fans. (Insert rolling eyes icon here.)

A wise and perceptive man (whose name begins with T....) once told me that "the ONLY thing this band has ever promised the fans is great music and shows. Anything beyond that is a bonus." This was while he and I were discussing what fans think they are *entitled to*.

We all have been so spoiled by Lovehammers. I can't think of any other band that has done all they have done for and with the fans, and who let us into their world as much as these guys do. But it looks like even all that is still not enough for some people out there. I don't know who wrote those comments, but I think they need to get a reality check. These guys have personal lives that need their attention, they have business matters that they no doubt CAN'T discuss publicly until all the details are worked out and contracts finalized, and sometimes they just need a little down time.

Most bands are NOT doing things in the public eye every single day of every single year. These guys have NO obligation to post their daily agendas and internal business matters for your inspection and approval.

And let me tell you something else. I am just a fan, but I work on a lot of things on a lot of different boards. Between that, my work, and things going on in my personal life that have shaken my very foundations, I have been finding that I simply can't give everything the attention that I would like to. I know there are times when I haven't been able to respond to messages, or thank everyone who has helped me. I try, but I know there are things slipping through the cracks.

It's got to be a lot worse for the band members, because they have SO many people contacting them, wanting things, pulling them in different directions, etc. They are working their butts off, and they don't have a staff of publicists and assistants to help them. I'm sure the last 1-2 years have been uncharted waters for them, and they are trying to figure things out as they go along. I think we all are. So I think that everyone should give them the benefit of the doubt, or at least give them a break!

So Marty, keep on blogging, and I love that you now feel comfortable enough to let your sense of humor and the playful parts of your personality shine through. Please don’t let anyone force you into a cookie-cutter image of how they think you should be, with no chance to express all the aspects of yourself, or to learn and change and grow. Bravo to you for trying new styles of writing and expressing yourself. You don’t always have to be serious. It is my privilege to vote for you and the band, and it’s a thrill to see you win well-deserved rewards. I do it with joy in my heart, because I love helping people I care about. I’m glad to have the chance to be able to do something to help your career. Being involved with this whole incredible journey you guys are on has been the pinnacle of my rock and roll experience, and I am working hard in every way I can to help ensure that the best is yet to come . I am so proud of you and Lovehammers!

With much love and respect,
NancyBBE

I can't help wondering why so many people on here are so defensive. If some people are not feeling the love, I'm not sure that means the other fans need to circle the wagons and write novels of how wonderful Marty is. Of course Marty is wonderful, we all love him. Does that then mean that we are not allowed to question anything about the man? Are we not entitled to feelings whatsoever? Who on this board or any board can dictate how someone should feel? There are people insterting eye rolls, people calling names, people telling others they are idiots. Is that what Marty would want? Do you REALLY think it is? Fans hitting other fans over the head? For what? Because you don't like their opinion? It just goes to show why I left this board months ago. I am open to all opinions, even if I don't agree with them. Its a shame some of you aren't.

I noticed that. I stated an opinion (from a place of concern) and thanked Marty for his blog, and for that I'm called delusional, an idiot and a fucktard. All fan support is important. Some people don't get that. They would rather resort to name-calling and drive more fans away. That's not helping the band, in my humble opinion. Cheers everyone!

Right. That first shot across the bow where Marty's sobriety was questioned really started this bitchfest off on the right footing. Very constructive and respectful.

Perhaps the reason the entitlement of some of the posters complaining is being met with less than sympathetic attitudes is because too many of us have seen this same sense of entitlement played out at shows. We've seen the behavior of a few who feel the band owes them, literally, everything, and it's a sickening display of disrespect we don't want to see played out more often. Maybe it's because we recognize this is the work of a couple of fans who don't feel they personally have gotten enough "face time" recently, so they're attempting some sort of "you better pay attention to me and do as I say or I'll leave" temper tantrum?

Just a thought. {hugs & kisses}

As for reading the comments, it seems that your fans are a bunch of whining little bitches. I think you should stick to focusing on the younger and less jaded music fans. This is so ridiculous. There's no need to be nasty. It's not just a "couple" of fans who are concerned, and it's not about "face time." I'm not "old", unless being Marty's age makes me old, and I have been to two shows, and didn't attempt to get any "face time." That's not what this is about for me. I have been very vested in wanting to see this band succeed and I have been concerned that a lot of former LH fans have lost interest and are all about Juke Kartel and Chris Pierson now. Some of them have told me why they lost interest. (The nastiest and personal attacks from some of the fans is part of the reason.) That's all. I posted because I care about this band and I want their fanbase to grow, not dwindle. Period.

Marty:

I have read this entire thread and it is quite thought provoking. You can choose to just listen to your "suck up" fans or the fans who seem to be sharing hearfelt and legitimate cocerns. The choice is yours? If you don't want any change the path of least resistance is to listen to the "suck ups". If you would like to implement productive change, reading and listening to some of the concerns expressed by the "concerned fans" might be a good temperature check. It seems to me it took a lot of courage for those with concerns to express such.

Thank you for your blog. I hope to see you and the band at a venue soon.

Why is it that the rabid Marty defenders feel the need to bash the other fans with concerns? I would think Marty would appreciate honest input. I don't see these fans as being "nasty" or "attacking" whereas the Marty defenders seem to have the same outdated "axe to grind".

To the well-intentioned folks here, blogs are typically not where you're going to get official band news and official statements. Blogs are a place for the writer to express him or herself more creatively, more humorously. It's a way get a more rounded view of the human being, which is never going to happen if he's made to feel that all he can ever do is prostrate himself to us to say "oh please, please, please and thank you, thank you, thank you" and make some sort of official accounting of his time to us every single time he writes.

There are many, many thank yous from him all over board posts, official emails, and in-person meetings with the man. Those who don't see those have incredibly short memories or have simply have chosen not to see them.

Marty,
Well, this has been one of the most interesting reads for me in a long time. I really hope that you read every single one of these comments. There is much to be learned here.

I have really mixed feelings about what is happening of late. I am guessing that people are remaining anonymous because speaking freely about LH appears to be something of the past. Just ask P12 and her innocent question about why you were not at the awards show. And the reason for this Marty defensiveness is so simple. Your loyal fans are really loyal....I do not think that we should be bashing folks who are asking questions. As someone already said, most are concerned. We should be more concerned about the fans who are gone and stopped asking.

Is the LH fan base dwindling ? No one can say for sure, but my guess is yes because of the "out of sight, out of mind" problem. The more important question for those of us who really want to be constructive and helpful is, is the fan base growing? And what can we do to help? Bashing each other is certainly not the answer. Bashing Marty is also not the answer.

As for the way the band members have been posting. Please give them the benefit of the doubt. My guess is that they are baffled at some of the questions. Let's face it, we all are. ;-) But what i have come to understand in reading all the questions on all the boards, is that it is not really about the questions. It is about wanting to be connected.

Blogs - Marty and Dino are incredibly talented and creative human beings. We should expect their blogs to reflect that. And let's give them a safe place to communicate with us and express themselves. (I for one, was very grateful to have read the Urinal 101 tutorial. Who knew ? Certainly not most of the female fans). If we do not, we will lose this wonderful gift of connectivty and the fan/band relationship that they have given us.

So my message to Marty and to all the fans is that a relationship is bi-directional. Try to make it as inclusive, respectful, and open as possible. And it needs to be a safe place to land for both the band and fans. So fans, don't change-please keep asking questions and being concerned. And Marty - please don't change-please keep as conneted as best you can and please, please, please keep showing your true selves through your blogs. Because the truth in your music is what brought us all together in the first place.

I hope everyone takes this in the postive spirit in which it was intended. Cuz I love the band and I love fans.

WOW!! Shocked? A little. Disappointed? Very much so. I will only go as far as saying this. Marty and LH owe us nothing, nothing at all. We do what we do because we WANT to. I know for me, there is no one holding a gun to my head telling me to vote, or to hop on a plane, or to even help out a little bit. I do this because I want to. I don't know whether or not their abscence has lost them a few fans or not, but if it has, so be it. They'll get more once they get back out there. To me this is all a bunch of shit and I wish I had the time some of you have to just sit around and badmouth each other. I am a fan, I will be a fan no matter what. MARTY owes nobody anything! Just my opinion :)

Why is it so many people post anonymously?? If you believe in what you say, why not own up to it?

I've been to several shows--these guys put out so much energy, such wonderful shows, do they really need to do anything more?? Yet they always do--meeting with fans afterward, communicating via these boards, etc. (by the way, I am definitely one of the "old biddies", and proud of it!!)

As far as "self-indulgent" goes? My god! Aren't we all entitled to that? IF that's what Marty's blogs are (and I'm not at all convinced of that), then I would whole-heartedly encourage him to continue!! Considering the fact that every ounce of himself is given away at concerts, he really NEEDS to indulge himself in this (or whatever) type of creative expression. The fact that he shares it with us is a BONUS!!
